A young conductor with a rapid career: Petr Popelka – Munich

Petr Popelka was the double bass player with the Sächsische Staatskapelle in Dresden until 2019, and since then his career as a conductor has taken off rapidly. After all, he is passionate about it, as can be seen – and heard – in the Isarphilharmonie. The Czech is completing a tour there with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, whose chief conductor he will be from next season. With sweeping gestures, he follows Antonín Dvořák’s Cello Concerto op. 104, takes fast and slow tempos to their extremes, and combines them with a thoroughly subjective agogic.
