A sofa in the lobby of the building that started the fire

The fire which caused the death of ten people, including four children, on the night of December 15 to 16, in Vaulx-en-Velin, near Lyon, is of human origin. According to the first elements of the investigation, revealed by Progress, it was one of the sofas in the hall of the building that caught fire. The flames then quickly spread throughout the seven floors of the building, starting from the ground floor.

The track of electrical failure is therefore ruled out. However, it is impossible for the experts to say whether the fire was intentional or not. Still according to the local newspaper, the absence of video surveillance cameras within the condominium and the omerta which reigns in the district complicate the progress of the work of the investigators.

But at this stage of the investigations, no suspect has been arrested or taken into custody. The investigation is therefore continuing and could last another year, according to the daily.
