A golden jackal corpse found, a first in France

A first in France. The French Biodiversity Office (OFB) announced this Wednesday that it had recovered the remains of a golden jackal. The individual, a 9 kg female, was found at the beginning of June on the side of a road in the town of Ensuès-la-Redonne (about twenty kilometers west of Marseille). According to the autopsy carried out, this female would probably have been born in 2022, assuming a likely reproduction of the species in the region.

The presence in France of the golden jackal, a species of canid which is somewhere between the wolf and the fox, had until now only been observed by indirect clues such as photos or droppings. The first traces of its presence date back to 2017 and only concern isolated individuals.
