A German family’s canoe trip ends tragically

A German family’s canoe capsized in the Netherlands. Only one in four family members has been rescued so far.

The tragic end of a German family’s canoe tour: the mother of the family died, the father and one of two daughters were missing and probably drowned, the police said on Thursday evening in Biddinghuizen, the Netherlands. The search was interrupted.

Canoe was found empty

The police were alerted around 3 p.m. and immediately started the search. The family was canoeing on the Veluwemeer, about 75 kilometers north-east of Amsterdam. The canoe then capsized for an unknown reason, as reported by radio station Omroep Flevoland. The canoe was then found empty on a small island.

The emergency services then discovered the little girl on a buoy, and the mother was found in the water. Coastguards and police were deployed with boats and helicopters. The police did not provide any information about the identity of the victims or the origin of the family.
