The city of Rennes evokes a measure of “social justice”. From this start of the school year, all students of Rennes public primary schools enrolled in the evening nursery will have the right to a free snack distributed by the city. This had already been the case for several years for kindergarten students. It will now be for elementary students who previously had to plan theirs.
However, the city services noted that between 15 and 20% of these students did not have a snack for the daycare, sometimes causing thefts. For others, the snacks provided by parents left much to be desired from a nutritional point of view, with often chocolate bars slipped in the morning hastily in school bags.
Free breakfasts in priority neighborhoods
In order to “eat healthy”, the afternoon snack served free of charge in Rennes nurseries will also be organic. “Each time there will be a fruit as well as a fruit bread or a chocolate bread”, details Ludovic Brossard, elected to the city of Rennes in charge of sustainable food. On Friday, students will also have the right to dairy products that have not been consumed during the week “in order to reduce food waste”.
The system of free breakfasts desired by the Government will also extend this return to Rennes. In test since 2019 in a few establishments, the measure will be deployed in all schools located in priority areas of the city (Cleunay, Le Blosne, Champs-Manceaux, Maurepas, Villejean). “It will not be systematic every morning, specifies Ludovic Brossard. The first step is to allow students not to attend classes hungry but also to educate families ”. According to figures provided by the Rennes academy, 13,000 free breakfasts should be served during the school year in Brittany.
