A first case of avian flu detected, the State takes measures

Avian flu appeared in the Loire-Atlantique region. One case was spotted on a dead bird. It is a great egret, found in the town of Frossay, on the banks of the Loire, in the Pays de Retz. This virus is actively circulating in Europe, via migratory birds. Avian flu had already been spotted in Vendée, where a farm of more than 12,000 turkeys was slaughtered last January.

In order to avoid a dispersion of this “particularly contagious and pathogenic” virus, the Loire-Atlantique prefecture has established “a temporary control zone” in Frossay and several of the surrounding municipalities (Vue, Rouans, Saint-Etienne-de-Montluc , Cordemais, Le Pellerin and Bouée).

The prefecture asks poultry owners in the department to “respect biosecurity measures”. If no new cases are detected, the restrictions will be lifted within 21 days.
