When the judges in Amsterdam handed down the verdict, Russia’s storming of Kiev was just ten months ago. Life imprisonment for two Russians and a Ukrainian, convicted in absentia, guilty of 298 counts of murder. It was the symbolic end of a long process that was supposed to clarify the crash of a Malaysia Airlines plane on the way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Flight MH17 was hit by a Russian anti-aircraft missile over eastern Ukraine on July 17, 2014 and crashed. Eight years later, at the end of 2022, the perpetrators were judged by a special tribunal that the Netherlands had created specifically for this case.
