A deluge of rain ravages the center of the country

Greece hit by devastating rains of rare intensity. The country was hit by “rains of 600 to 800 mm in twenty-four hours in Magnesia”, in central Greece, “an unprecedented phenomenon in the meteorological data of the country” since 1955, said Wednesday Dimitris Ziakopoulos, a meteorologist. Two people have been found dead in the past two days in Magnesia and at least four are missing in this region, located some 330 km north of Athens.

Torrential rains still on the program Thursday

The downpours that fell, mainly on Tuesday, on the city of Volos, capital of Magnesia, and on Mount Pelion represent “a large quantity of water for Greece as well as for many regions in Europe,” said the specialist.

The Minister for the Climate Crisis Vassilis Kikilias stressed for his part that “the intensity and duration of the phenomenon are also unprecedented”. Faced with criticism of the victims and the significant damage caused by the floods in Magnesia and in the neighboring departments, the minister indicated that the country’s infrastructures had to be reorganized to deal with “the climate crisis”. Torrential rains in Greece are expected to last until Thursday afternoon, according to forecasts from the national meteorological service. As a reminder, Greece suffered from major fires throughout the summer.
