Wetlands have long been filled in, abused or even removed. In recent years and the recognition of their essential role in maintaining a biological balance, they are much better preserved. The example from Ille-et-Vilaine shows us that it still happens that they are stupidly destroyed. In Argentré-du-Plessis, east of Rennes, earthworks carried out around the Panpoulard pond ransacked a wetland yet identified as such on the local urban plan.
This work carried out at the edge of this private pond led to the destruction of a wooded area and the entire ecosystem that was there. Reported by local residents, this site will be closely scrutinized by the water police. While France already fears a new drought, the essential role of wetlands is constantly recalled by scientists, who insist on the importance of maintaining and recreating these wild spaces capable of absorbing water in winter and keep even in the hottest of summer.
