A car drives into the crowd at the carnival, at least four dead

This Sunday morning, around 5 a.m., a motorist drove into the crowd in Strépy-Bracquegnies, a district of the city of La Louvière, in Belgium. According to an initial report, at least four people were killed.

Many people gathered early this Sunday to attend the collection of the Gilles before the start of the carnival festivities. A car arrived relatively quickly, hitting a group of a hundred people according to several Belgian media. The motorist continued on his way before being finally arrested, report our colleagues from the Evening.

Intentional or not?

According to the mayor of the town, Jacques Gobert, a provisional report shows four people killed and 12 others injured. He also told the Belga press agency that the car was traveling at “high speed”. It is currently unknown whether the driver intentionally drove into the crowd.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo lamented on Twitter that a “community that gathered to celebrate was struck in the heart”. “My thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. All my support also goes to the emergency services for their help and assistance provided,” he added.
