A boom for water and flood protection is overdue – economy

The Ahr Valley, the scene of a flood disaster two years ago that killed 184 people, is the best example. Documented since 1348, devastating floods repeatedly caused enormous damage to property and took people’s lives. A hundred years ago, however, those responsible on site had a good idea: They had plans drawn up for retention basins in which flood water with a volume of up to 11.5 million cubic meters was to be collected before it could have flooded the Ahr Valley. But these stores were never built. It was decided that the money would rather be spent on the Nürburgring race track.
