In Australia, an operation caused a sensation in which a police officer used a stun gun on a 95-year-old woman with dementia in a retirement home. She did not survive the incident.

A week after a police Taser operation against a demented 95-year-old in Australia, the old woman died. “It is with great sadness” that she announced the death of Clare Nolan, the New South Wales State Police said on Wednesday. The 95-year-old died “peacefully” in the hospital surrounded by her family. The police officer responsible is being investigated for dangerous bodily harm.

The police were called to a nursing home a week ago because a resident was “armed with a knife”. On site, the police officers asked the old lady several times to drop her knife.

Taser use on great-grandmother

Deputy Police Chief Peter Cotter said officers were called to Yallambee Lodge in southern New South Wales on Wednesday about the elderly woman. Paramedics and police officers tried for “minutes” to convince Nolan to drop the saw-toothed steak knife. When the 95-year-old nevertheless moved towards her, an officer fired his taser at her, Cotter said.

According to media reports, the fragile 95-year-old great-grandmother suffered from dementia. Nolan hit his head backwards on the ground, according to Deputy Chief Cotter. She was then treated in the hospital, her family was with her.

“We are very concerned about what happened, so we have launched an investigation,” Cotter told reporters. Homicide officers would also be involved in the investigation. After the incident on Wednesday, the police initially did not confirm that the 95-year-old had been tasered.

Police officer charged with aggravated assault

Cotter also announced that the body cameras of the police officers involved captured the altercation. However, the recordings were not initially to be published. The police investigation will be independently reviewed upon completion.

Meanwhile, an Australian police officer is being investigated for causing dangerous bodily harm. The officer is due to appear in court in July, New South Wales Police said on Wednesday.
