Austria: One-eyed wolf with a huge pack – is the clip a fake?

Watch the video: A one-eyed wolf with a huge pack allegedly filmed in Austria – that’s behind the clip.

This video of a wolf pack is going viral on social media.

The clip, which shows 14 of the predators, is said to have come from Allentsteig in Lower Austria.

The supposedly current recordings of a wildlife camera show the pack in a wintry forest.

Social media users react with concern for grazing animals or with joy at the sight of the pack.

But is the fascinating clip really real?

The claim that the video comes from Austria is a fake.

The district hunting master responsible, Manfred Jäger, told the “Niederösterreichische Nachrichten” that the clip certainly did not come from Allentsteig.

The video originally comes from the YouTube channel of Canadian ecology and evolution professor Andrew Hendry. (Source: Mimikama)

The short clip is also part of a longer video in which the researcher documents the life of a one-eyed wolf in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

What cannot be seen in the excerpt in the social media: The time code – the recording is not current, but was made in November 2021.

The case shows how easily videos can be taken out of context on social media and why it is important to critically question clips.

How do we check videos for manipulation in the editorial office? It is important to look at the details. The individual frames of a video often reveal whether a video has been edited. We take a close look at each image and enlarge individual sections. Indications of a fake are, for example: lack of motion blur, unnatural shadows or editing errors. The general rule at stern is: Seriousness before speed. We always double-check facts and material thoroughly before publishing them. For this we work with the cross-editorial “Team Verification” together with RTL, NTV, RTL2, Radio NRW.
