The foretaste of winter in the north was strong but did not last. It should be milder again at the beginning of the new week.
In the night of Monday, snowfall is moving across the country in the southern half of Lower Saxony, up to five centimeters are possible. The snow will gradually turn to rain. There is a risk of ice there. The temperature inland could fall to minus five degrees, said meteorologist Michael Bauditz from the German Weather Service (DWD). A very thin layer of snow could remain locally, especially near the Baltic Sea coast. Even on Monday it will still be wet and cold during the day. According to the DWD, the “winter episode” ends on Tuesday night at the latest.
First snowfalls not very productive – except in the north-east
The first snowfalls on Friday and Saturday were mostly not particularly heavy in northern Germany. In the northeast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Around Ueckermünde, on the other hand, around ten centimeters of fresh snow fell, the winter service was in action. Most weather-related accidents were minor. The police called on drivers to switch from summer to winter tires now at the latest.
“As far as we can see into the future, around the end of next week, the temperature level will drop back to almost ten degrees in the greater Hamburg area,” said DWD meteorologist Josef Kantuzer. Rain is to be expected again and again over the course of the coming week, but this will not make up for the many dry periods this year, according to the meteorologist.
