King Charles III was proclaimed monarch in Antarctica. Research station staff even held a ceremony.

King Charles III now reigns in one of the most remote places in the world. (73). The Rothera research station in Antarctica proclaimed the successor to the late Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) as their new monarch. In addition, the employees there hoisted the flag of Great Britain and shared a photo of the ceremony on the official Twitter account.

The British Antarctic Territory (BAT) is a 1.7 million square kilometer area in Antarctica that has been claimed by Great Britain since 1908. The UK’s overseas enclave is not internationally recognised. The area is basically uninhabited, but is home to numerous research stations. The Rothera station with up to 130 researchers is considered the capital of the area – including its own post office.
