Ambassador of Ukraine: Schönbach’s resignation is not enough

The Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, Andriy Melnyk, has described the resignation of Vice Admiral Kay-Achim Schönbach as head of the German Navy as insufficient. He wrote on Twitter: “German arrogance and megalomania! While Ukraine welcomes the timely resignation of the Inspector of Deutsche Schönbach, this step is not enough to restore full confidence in German politics. The German government needs to change course towards Kiev !!” During a lecture in a think tank in India, Schönbach contradicted Germany’s official position on the Ukraine conflict. Schönbach, among other things, on Russia’s annexation of Crimea: “The Crimean peninsula is gone, it will never come back, that’s a fact.” He described the fear of a Russian invasion of Ukraine as “nonsense.” He also spoke of himself as a “very radical Roman Catholic Christian” and therefore thinks it’s good to be able to count on Christian Russia as a partner against China. After the statements became known, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called the German ambassador to the country for an interview. Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht accepted Schönbach’s resignation on Saturday, the ministry announced. Schönbach himself called his statements a mistake.
