70 years of Pixi Book: Small book, big feelings – culture

Great love for Janosch’s little monkey, fierce anger at Leo Lausemaus – the Pixi book is 70 years old. SZ editors about the little book that they will never forget.

It’s clear: As a mother or father, you would of course much rather allow the children to quickly reach into the bowl of books that the (life-sized?) Pixi goblin is holding in their hands in front of the supermarket checkout than let them go to the candy shelf. In the worst case, you have to spend a few evenings reading in detail about the processes on a construction site or endure how Leo Lausemaus’ parents, dressed in the style of the Amish People, lovingly admonish their chubby son for nothing. In the best case, the ten by ten centimeter booklets, the first of which were published by Carlsen Verlag 70 years ago, even retain something like a first literary experience. After all, the Pixi series didn’t just contain well-behaved Conni adventures or career information texts like “My Friend, the Train Driver”. But also images and texts from famous authors such as Janosch and Cornelia Funke, from illustrators such as Jörg Mühle, Axel Scheffler and Susanne Straßer. Here, SZ authors report which Pixi booklet triggered strong feelings in them when they read it and read it aloud.
