Borussia Mönchengladbach had a memorable debacle against SC Freiburg. On the 14th matchday of the Bundesliga, Gladbach was not only desolate when defending high balls.
On Sunday (05.12.2021), SC Freiburg shot down Borussia Mönchengladbach 6-0 (6-0) thanks to a furious first half. Maximilian Eggestein (2nd), Kevin Schade (5th), Philipp Lienhart (12th), Nicolas Höfler (19th), Lucas Höler (25th) and Nico Schlotterbeck (37th) lifted Freiburg to fourth place. Due to the disaster, Gladbach lost touch with the European places.
Lienhart commented on the highest victory in the history of the Freiburg Bundesliga after the game on the Sportschau microphone: “We never stopped and we were rewarded.” It was also the goal to “keep zero” in half two.
Gladbach’s Jonas Hofmann was tough on his own team: “That was partly a refusal to work, as we defended the standards. Completely naive, without aggressiveness. That was desolate.” The performance has to do “zero point zero” with the trainer.
Gladbach horror start: Freiburg overrun Borussia
The hosts, who are strong at home this season and have only conceded five goals in front of their own crowd, experienced a textbook false start. Freiburg literally overran Gladbach – and cheered six times in half one. After just twelve minutes, the Borussia fans vented their displeasure with the wild defensive performance with a whistle concert.
But one after anonther. Goal one: Schade asserted itself together with captain Christian Günter on the left side, which Gladbach’s Stefan Lainer plowed. Schade’s sharp flank was unintentionally placed at colleague Eggestein’s feet by Höler. Eggestein was able to slip into the danger zone to make it 1-0 despite the majority in Gladbach.
All dams break in Gladbach
Hit two fell again on the left. Günter’s cross was sunk in his head by Schade – his first Bundesliga goal. But things got even worse for Borussia after the disappointing one 1: 4 in the derby against Cologne broke all dams at home against Freiburg.
“That sounds stupid to all Gladbach fans, but I think the best thing is really to tick off these eight days,” said Hofmann about the ten goals conceded in two games.
Freiburg standards break Borussia neck
The big drawback: the standard defense. Vincenzo Grifo hit a dangerous free kick and then an equally dangerous corner kick – the two dormant balls led to the goals of Lienhart and Höfler. And even at 5-0, the SC retained air sovereignty. Grifo brought the ball back in, Höfler hung up for Höler, who headed in from close range.
That was already a novelty: The Freiburg team was the first team in league history to score five goals in an away game within the first 25 minutes.
Surreal: Schlotterbeck heads a 6-0
And the faces on the Gladbacher Bank remained petrified. Captain Lars Stindl’s disbelief was already written on his face, even before Bensebaini lost the duel with Nico Schlotterbeck after another Freiburg standard. He sank the ball to make it 6-0. Eight Freiburg shots at Yann Sommer’s goal resulted in six goals.
So far, there have only been six goals conceded in one half for a home team – in September 1964 Borussia Dortmund led 6-0 at FC Schalke 04.
Maximum penalty for Lainer and Pléa
Gladbach meanwhile hoped for a penalty. Because SC goalkeeper Mark Flekken had brought Marcus Thuram down in the duel (26th), but referee Robert Hartmann did not evaluate Flekken’s touch as an active movement.
Coach Adi Hütter made two changes before the half-hour mark. Patrick Herrmann and Breel Embolo replaced Stefan Lainer and Alassane Pléa (29th).
Less full throttle in half two
The second half then lost some of its pace. Even though SC trainer Christian Streich continued to loudly demand “full throttle” from his team. And Freiburg remained dangerous: Höler almost scored the 7-0 with a volley shot from distance, but just missed the goal (72nd).
Gladbach showed character, held against it and gained a share of the game, but was long lost. The “foals” got the game to an end without breaking apart any further.
15th matchday: Gladbach in Leipzig, Freiburg against Hoffenheim
