50 years ago today, Carl Gustaf’s grandfather, King Gustaf Adolf, died. The palace commemorates him at the beginning of the anniversary day.

It all began 50 years ago with a death, which the Swedish royal family commemorated at the beginning of the anniversary day. “On this day 50 years ago, Gustaf VI Adolf, King of Sweden, Goth and Vende, died in Helsingsborg Hospital at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 4 days,” it says on Instagram about a “photo from the image archive of the Bernadotte Library” that shows the old and current king together.

The palace also says in the message: “The king was succeeded by his grandson Crown Prince Carl Gustaf, who ascended to the throne as Carl XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, after the death of his grandfather.” Carl Gustaf’s own father, Gustav Adolf Hereditary Prince of Sweden (1906-1947), died in a plane crash at Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport in Denmark.

The anniversary weekend has begun

The anniversary day (September 15th) begins with a solemn thanksgiving service in honor of Carl Gustaf and ends with a large banquet in the palace in Stockholm. Tomorrow, Saturday (September 16th), the royal family’s carriage ride through the capital is on the agenda, followed by an open-air concert in front of the palace.
