Tehran courts have sentenced 400 people to prison terms of up to 10 years for their involvement in the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini nearly three months ago, Iranian justice announced on Tuesday.
“During the hearings concerning the rioters in the province of Tehran, 160 people were sentenced to terms ranging from five to ten years in prison, 80 people to terms of two to five years and 160 people to terms of up to two years,” said Tehran’s chief justice, Ali Alghasi-Mehr, as quoted by the judicial authority’s Mizan Online site.
11 sentenced to death
The execution in recent days of two 23-year-old men in connection with the protests has sparked a wave of international condemnation. Majidreza Rahnavard and Mohsen Shekari were hanged for “moharebeh” (“war against God”) under Iranian Islamic Sharia.
Ahead of the two executions, Iran’s judiciary said it had sentenced 11 people to death in connection with the protests, but activists say a dozen more are facing charges that could carry the death penalty.
Since the beginning of the protest movement, thousands of people have been arrested. Iran’s top security body said on December 3 that more than 200 people had been killed during the protests.
