3,000 tonnes of paracetamol produced locally by 2024, a first in Europe

3,000 tonnes of paracetamol produced in Toulouse per year? It is the purpose of society Ipsophene based at Saint-Orens-de-Gameville in Haute-Garonne, which will create a continuous production unit in the Toulouse conurbation to meet almost a third of demand in France by 2026. It will be the first European paracetamol production plant with 100% of the production chain in France, from the active ingredient to distribution. With it, the possibility of dealing with potential drug shortages.

Located in Toulouse, this production unit will create 30 jobs from 2024, with commissioning scheduled for the first half of the year. Ipsophene is also banking on real technological progress with a new, innovative and more ecological manufacturing process.

“Let’s speed up the reindustrialization of drug production”

This project is aided by the Region, which has decided to support this entirely sovereign project to the tune of 4.2 million euros. “I wanted to make the biotherapies sector a priority in our industrial relocation strategy in Occitanie, with the aim of being among the European leaders in the field of drug production”, explains Carole Delga.

“To achieve this, the Region promotes the establishment and deployment of new factories, like the company Ipsophene and the installation of its future paracetamol production unit in Toulouse. With this large-scale and 100% sovereign project, we are accelerating the reindustrialization of drug production in France. In this way, we are protecting French people from any risk of shortages and anticipating their needs in the face of certain illnesses, while creating jobs locally,” adds the President of the Region.
