Shortly before the 2022 congressional elections, a man attacked the husband of top politician Nancy Pelosi with a hammer. He has now been sentenced to 30 years in prison for assault and attempted kidnapping.

A good year and a half after the hammer attack on the husband of top US politician Nancy Pelosi, the assassin was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The responsible judge in San Francisco has now announced this sentence. The attacker had already been found guilty by a jury in November of attempted kidnapping of a public official and assaulting an immediate family member of a public official.

Perpetrator planned to kidnap Pelosi

Pelosi, now 84, was attacked and seriously injured in the couple’s home in San Francisco in October 2022 – a few days before the US congressional elections. He required surgery after the attack for a fractured skull and serious injuries to his right arm and hands.

The perpetrator was targeting the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, but did not find her during the attack. He was arrested at the scene. The public prosecutor’s office had demanded 40 years in prison.

Before announcing the sentence, Nancy Pelosi wrote to the court asking it to impose a “very long” prison sentence. The attack had “devastating consequences for three generations of our family,” she wrote. To this day, her home is haunted by memories of the crime.
