Laura Spears can hardly believe her luck – she would have missed the win by a hair’s breadth.

We all have millions in profits, rich princes and fantastic discounts in our spam folders. But what if such an email actually delivers what it promises? A Michigan woman almost overlooked her newfound wealth.

That almost went wrong: As the Michigan Lottery company blog reports, a winning notification for a whopping three million US dollars ended up in a winner’s spam folder. Laura Spears (55) solved the lottery ticket on New Year’s Eve and drew the right numbers. Weeks later, when she was looking for a lost email from someone she knew, she stumbled upon the lottery winning notification in the depths of her email inbox. Only now did she look again into the account with the operator and found that she had actually become a millionaire.

“I saw on Facebook that the jackpot had grown enormously in the meantime, so I played along,” the lottery company quoted the winner as saying. “It still shocks me that I actually won.” Spears wants to share the money with her family and retire much earlier, she revealed. By the way: To be on the safe side, she added the Michigan Lottery sender to the list of trusted addresses – you never know.

Is there now a threat of spam from Michigan?

The lottery company uses the opportunity to advertise its online offering. The story, however, went around the world. It is not unlikely that cyber criminals will want to use the Bohei and that a win from the Michigan Lottery will soon find its way into your mailbox. But then again in the well-known form, namely fake and with a link to misfortune.

This case should still serve as a motivation to at least take a quick look at the spam folder, or to check the result after a lottery game in general – there are similar cases in Germany. For example, Lotto Sachsen-Anhalt has been waiting for a mysterious lottery player from Magdeburg for almost a year, who has still not collected his prize of at least 100,000 euros. FYI: The entitlement expires after three years.
