Holstein Kiel won the north duel at the beginning of the second half of the second division. The “Storks” surprisingly prevailed on Friday evening, but also deservedly 3-0 (3-0) against leaders FC St. Pauli.
The victory of Schleswig-Holstein could have been even clearer. But in the second round, despite numerous chances, the KSV no longer showed the callousness of the first half of the game, in which practically every shot on goal was a hit. St. Pauli was unusually weak, especially defensively. Small consolation: The Kiezkicker still go into the winter break as front runners, but the lead over pursuers Darmstadt can melt down to one point.
Kiels Bartels: Starting shot for a hopefully good second half of the season
“We just didn’t do well. We had too many playback errors, too many technical errors – untypical for us. You can see that we still have a lot to do,” said St. Pauli’s coach Timo Schultz and added: “Maybe that was it also a shot in front of the bow at the right time, so that the boys notice even over Christmas: ‘We have to accelerate’. “
Kiel’s goalscorer Fin Bartels, on the other hand, was overjoyed: “This victory was incredibly important, but it should only be the starting signal for a hopefully better second half of the season.” This continues for the Kiel on January 16 with the guest appearance at Schalke 04. St. Pauli has a home game against Erzgebirge Aue the day before.
Kiels Bartels scores against his ex-club
Defense chief Hauke Wahl fell out of the Kiel team due to an infection and was replaced by Simon Lorenz. Youngster Jonas Sterner also celebrated his starting XI debut on the right wing. The rebuilt KSV defense initially had a lot of trouble with the Hamburgers, who had the same formation as the Started 1: 1 in Düsseldorf. Goalkeeper Thomas Dähne had to show all his skills early on against Jackson Irvine (2nd) and Daniel Kofi-Kyereh (3rd).

But the first goal of the game fell on the other side: St. Pauli’s goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj blocked a long-range shot from Lewis Holtby strongly to the side, but was unlucky that Fin Bartels was there. The former Kiezkicker pushed in from an acute angle to 1-0 for the “Storks” (8th).
And another ex-Hamburger increased to 2-0
The hit gave the hosts a boost. From then on, the five-man chain got along better, and St. Pauli could not play its usual combination game. In addition, Hamburg revealed unusual weaknesses on the defensive. After a cross from Sterner, chaos reigned in the guests’ penalty area, the ball bounced back and forth and ended up at the feet of the completely free-standing Finn Porath. The ex-HSV professional scored 2-0 for Kiel (29th).
St. Pauli plays, Holstein counters ice cold
St. Pauli had a lot more possession of the ball, but didn’t know what to do with it. Kiel, on the other hand, played straight forward after conquering the ball. Fabian Reese forgave after a counterattack (35th), Benedikt Pichler made it better shortly before the half-time whistle: After a splendid pass from Sterner, he ran to Vasilj alone, rounded the goalkeeper and scored the 3-0 for the home side (45th + 1).

“Storks” pursue usury of opportunities
St. Pauli’s coach Schultz reacted after the break with a three-man substitute and brought in Finn Ole Becker, Christopher Buchtmann and Rico Benatelli. But there was little to be seen of the guests catching up. On the contrary: The Kielers were several times close to their fourth goal. Vasilj parried against Pichler (50th), Fiete Arp (57th) and Phil Neumann (68th). Reese shot over the gate from close range (77th).
St. Pauli without impact
Kiel’s goalkeeper Dähne wasn’t nearly as busy as Vasilj. The defenders posted in front of Dähne cleared everything away, St. Pauli’s striker Guido Burgstaller was signed off, and top preparer Kyereh hardly found a gap for his passes. A shot from Benatelli next to the goal was the best opportunity for Hamburg (79th). Only the Kielers remained really dangerous: Bartels ran through the penalty area undisturbed, but then messed up because he collided with teammate Arp (82nd).
That didn’t bother the Kiel appendix: “Oh, how beautiful it is” rang out through the Holstein Stadium – the KSV professionals had earned this Christmas singing with their strong performance.
