After new processors and high-end graphics cards were introduced in 2022, the path for 2023 was initially set. In addition to the high-end segment, the mass market with a good price-performance ratio is particularly crucial. And that’s exactly where 2023 initially got off to a bad start.
The Nvidia Geforce RTX 4070 Ti was released on January 5th for around 900 euros. While there was little to complain about in terms of performance and efficiency of the graphics card, many readers saw the price slightly differently than in our title. In retrospect, 900 euros for 12 GB of graphics memory was simply too much.
The Nvidia Geforce RTX 4070, introduced in April, hit this point better. Although the performance is between 15 and 20 percent lower, with a purchase price starting at around 600 euros, it is still the more attractive offer, especially since 12 GB of GDDR6 are still installed. However, the competition wasn’t sleeping either.
Buyers want more graphics memory
If you’re looking for a significantly cheaper option, you’ll either end up with the AMD Radeon RX 7600 or the Nvidia Geforce RTX 4060. Although both graphics cards didn’t achieve a significant jump in performance compared to the previous generation, they were actually a little cheaper. The manufacturers advertised the cards as an upgrade for models that are two generations older in the same price range, as upgrading then only really becomes worthwhile.
Apparently successful, because in many cases the models were quite well received; However, the Nvidia Geforce RTX 4060 Ti models that were released a month later are not. From the users’ perspective, the price-performance ratio was simply not good enough. The 16 GB version in particular was too expensive for future-proof storage equipment, while 8 GB would be sufficient, but is extremely tight.
AMD is catching up in software features
This played into AMD’s hands, as the Radeon RX 7700 XT and especially the RX 7800 XT in the same segment offer more memory and sometimes slightly more computing power. AMD is only lagging behind when it comes to software, even though a lot has happened with FSR3 and Hypr-RX in the last few months.
This year there are a few more graphics cards available. The AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT is expected at CES 2024 to narrow the gap to the RX 7700 XT. Not much is known about it yet. At Nvidia, however, it is an open secret that at least three current GPUs are being reissued in a super version.
