After the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY… Unsolved” discussed the case of the baker’s apprentice Klaus Berninger from Lower Franconia, who was killed in 1990, the police received around 200 new tips. The police said on Thursday that two clues had focused the investigation on a person from Berninger’s personal environment.
According to the police, immediately after the broadcast of the approximately 24-minute report, the phones in the television studio and at the police station rang continuously. A large number of the clues related to a knife found at the crime scene and a mail order catalog from which Berninger is said to have ordered a knife shortly before his death.
The then 16-year-old Berninger disappeared on December 20, 1990 in his hometown of Wörth am Main (Miltenberg district). Three days later, two riders found his body in a forest near the small town on the Bavarian-Hessian border. In the so-called cold case, the police resumed intensive investigations a good year ago.
