2-0 against Wolfsburg: FC Bayern wins without much brilliance

Status: 08/14/2022 7:35 p.m

FC Bayern had a few problems at the beginning, but then they managed to win comfortably against VfL Wolfsburg.

The Munich team won 2-0 (2-0) on Sunday (08/14/2022) in the arena in Fröttmaning, which was sold out with 75,000 spectators after goals from Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller. As a result, the team of coach Julian Nagelsmann defended the top of the table in the Bundesliga. Niko Kovač, who coached Bayern in the 2018/19 season and won the league and DFB Cup double with them, has just one point with VfL after two games.

Same starting eleven as in the 6:1 in Frankfurt

The defending champions started with the team that had been on the pitch at the beginning of the opening game. In the 6-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern led 5-0 at the break, against Wolfsburg the teams went into the dressing room with a score of 2-0.

After a minute of mourning for the former Munich President Willi O. Hoffmann, who died five days earlier, the game started with advantages for the guests. They made promising runs down their left flank against Bayern right-back Benjamin Pavard on several occasions. There was only a little missing, then the Lower Saxony would have even taken the lead in the fifth minute. Alphonso Davies cleared a header from Patrick Wimmer, who had switched from Arminia Bielefeld to VfL in the summer, to the outside of the post.

The same Pavard, who had apparently been identified as a weak point, then recorded the first opportunity for the master. After a corner kick, the French world champion headed the ball onto the crossbar (14′).

Musiala and Müller score before the break

After Bayern’s first successful move, the ball was even in the goal, but Sadio Mané was clearly offside at the end. The video assistant then reported this after the goal had initially been recognized by referee Harm Osmers (19th).

Musiala scored the first regular goal before the break with a shot from 16 meters (33′). The national player fell a little happily after a pass from Müller against two Wolfsburg players and got the ball, then quickly got up and scored. It was Musiala’s third goal of the season.

Bayern got into the game better and better after that and now clearly dominated. Müller, who kept his foot in a shot by Joshua Kimmich, made it 2-0 (44th). Davies set up the goal with a powerful solo down the left flank.

Sané and Kruse come into play in the second half

Both coaches exchanged a player in the second half. At Bayern Leroy Sané came for Serge Gnabry, at VfL Max Kruse for Wimmer.

The guests got off to a better start again. Lukas Nmecha was prevented from scoring with a united defense just before the goal line (49th). But Bayern responded quickly. Koen Casteels just saved a deflected shot from Sané (57′).

As in Frankfurt, Munich took it easy in the second half given the comfortable lead. A header goal by Mané was checked for offside and disallowed (72′), without the pictures revealing who is said to have been offside in a very tight situation.

Bayern now at VfL Bochum

Bayern continues on the 3rd matchday on Sunday (21.08.2022, 5.30 p.m.) at VfL Bochum, who are still pointless. Wolfsburg plays against FC Schalke 04 the day before from 3.30 p.m.
