According to a survey, 16 percent of Germans are doing without regular meals because of the rise in inflation. And another 13 percent are considering doing without if inflation persists, like that picturenewspaper, citing an Insa survey, reported. 68 percent answered “no”. 32 percent of the participants with a net household income of less than 1000 euros answered the same question with “yes”, as the newspaper further reported. According to the survey, 41 percent of all respondents shop in cheaper supermarkets, while 42 percent cook more sparingly, for example by doing without meat and fish.
Inflation in Germany rose to 7.9 percent in May, while food prices rose by more than 11 percent in a year. Statisticians determined a similarly high level of inflation in West Germany in the winter of 1973/1974. Energy in the wake of the Ukraine war is currently having a price-driving effect. But more expensive raw materials and problems in the supply chain are also accelerating inflation.
