13,000 cigarette butts collected in one hour Place de la République

The figure is impressive and clearly shows the scale of the pollution. At the initiative of a biology teacher, around thirty students from Saint-Martin high school in Rennes collected cigarette butts on Tuesday in Place de la République. And the fishing was unfortunately good as they collected around 13,000 cigarette butts in just one hour in this busy square.

Founder of the environmental protection association Hebdo Ecolo, Mathieu Plot was present during this action. The opportunity for him to recall “that a single cigarette butt thrown on the ground makes 500 liters of water unhealthy and that the first cause of death in the world, apart from old age, is the quality of the water”, underlines the association, specifying that all the butts collected will be recycled.

Other collections are already planned in Rennes. They will be announced on the association’s website looking for volunteers to participate.
