The living room without a sofa: why crack?

The sofa is usually the center of the living room, so it may seem incongruous to do without it. However, it does not only have advantages! On the one hand, it can be a bit bulky: unless you opt for the small 2-seater sofa, it is therefore smarter to choose another option in a small living room. On the other hand, it lacks a little flexibility: not great, if you dream of a modular living room that adapts to the imperatives of the moment!

If the sofa seems essential in the living room in the West, this is not the case in all cultures. You can therefore eliminate it for purely aesthetic purposes, to adopt an oriental decoration or a Japanese decoration, for example.

A living room without a sofa: 12 ideas to inspire you

To replace the sofa in the living room, it is a question of finding alternatives which reconcile comfort and conviviality, and which sticks to your desires in terms of decoration.

The Day Bed (or daybed) is an excellent choice for a living room with a very chic decor. This minimalist piece is located at the crossroads of the bench and the meridian. If you can sit there to chat or have a drink, it is also possible to lie down there to read… or to sleep, of course! Top in a very contemporary living room, it also advantageously replaces the sofa in a living room with retro decor.

Sometimes you dream of a large sofa, sometimes you plan to furnish the living room with two sofas. Not to mention all the times when you would like to be able to have individual and cocooning seats… The solution is to opt for low chairs! Not only can you assemble or separate these low armchairs at will, but you can even find very nice convertible models.

Armchairs are traditionally seen as complements to the sofa. What if they replaced him? This option is particularly smart in a family living room, in which you can choose models with dimensions adapted to the size of the children. Because we too often tend to forget: standard armchairs and sofas are not really practical for the little ones! Moreover, if the family has young children, it may be wise to adopt the living room without a coffee table in order to further guarantee their safety.

Of course, it is possible to find a great sofa for less than 1000 €. But even with an unlimited budget, it is not necessarily easy to find the sofa that perfectly suits your desires and your needs. If so, what if you did it yourself? A few pallets, floor mattresses… you don’t need more to have a chill space full of character!

Alone or in accumulation, the floor mattress is sufficient on its own to replace the sofa. This is one of the smartest alternatives to the sofa in a small living room. Of course, we think of accessorizing it with many cushions. For more comfort, you can also stack several mattresses.

To give a very zen spirit to a very small living room, we love tatami floor cushions. They’re even smarter because they’re easy to stack in a corner, so you can take them out and set them up on the rug or around the coffee table on demand.

Floor cushions don’t just spruce up the garden furniture: they also replace the sofa in the indoor lounge! We particularly love the artisanal Berber models or the pieces inspired by them. Not only are they cozy, but they are enough to adopt an ethnic style in the living room.

If the floor cushions are specifically designed to be used as seats, you can favor classic cushions to create a friendly space in the center of the living room. This alternative to the sofa is particularly hot in a bohemian atmosphere.

The Bean Bag is an XXL-sized pouf, filled with polystyrene beads. First reserved for the children’s room, it is now available in very designer versions. Light and easy to handle and move on demand, they are an original and playful alternative to the sofa.

In recent seasons, we have had fun blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors. Outdoor furniture therefore invites itself into the living room. Among the pieces that give maximum personality to the decor – and which can replace the sofa: the hanging chair. It is adopted in individual format or as a model for two. The rattan model has a very versatile character, and it is as sublime in the bohemian living room as in the trendy Urban Jungle living room.
