By the way… what is fouta?

Fouta (or foutah) is originally a fabric used in India. Its use spread first in North Africa, where it is particularly popular in the hammam, then in Europe. It is originally a piece of woven cotton, with fringes, which measures 2 x 1 m. Today, it is made with more varied materials: recycled cotton or hemp, for example.

Light and thin, fouta has the particularity of drying quickly, which means it is primarily used as an alternative to terry toweling. This fabric, which can be adorned with various colors and patterns, is however much more versatile, and it can easily be transformed into a real decorative accessory!

The fouta is very close to the peshtemal, the traditional hammam towel used in Turkey. The latter is, however, slightly smaller, and is commonly worn as a scarf. It can also be used to decorate your interior!

The best decorative ideas for adopting fouta

Soft, airy and available in an astonishing variety of colors and, more and more often, patterns, the fouta is one of the most versatile decorative accessories.

The blanket brings a very cocooning touch to the decor. If we love wool or faux fur in winter, these cozy materials are no longer really suitable for the summer season. We then adopt the fouta to accessorize the sofa. We particularly like it outdoors, where we combine it with an outdoor rug to spruce up the garden furniture.

Nothing like a floor mattress placed next to the window to create a reading corner with a view, or a bench on the balcony to relax while enjoying the view. But in the event of someone being overlooked or an unexpected ray of sunlight, you just have to change places. The good idea is to use your fouta as a privacy screen or as a shade sail. Think about the fringes, which make it easy to hang it wherever you want!

The peshtemal is an interesting choice to accompany a fouta used as a tablecloth. With its format, it can be used for example as a napkin. It’s up to you to decide whether you put together a coordinated set, opting for a color that matches the tablecloth, or whether you play with combining colors and patterns.
