12 people in absolute emergency after possible carbon monoxide poisoning

After suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in a school in Côtes-d’Armor, twelve people, including schoolchildren, are in absolute emergency this Friday, December 8.

Twelve people are in absolute emergency after suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in a primary school this Friday, December 8, BFMTV learned, confirming information reported by Ouest-France.

The school, located in Saint-Alban, near Lamballe in Côtes-d’Armor, was evacuated in the morning. 76 children and 5 adults were welcomed to the Saint-Alban village hall. In total, 37 people, including two adults, were victims of poisoning.

Twelve people are currently in absolute emergency, due to carbon monoxide oversaturation, according to a report from the prefecture established at 1:48 p.m. which remains evolving. They had neurological problems or lost consciousness.

People classified as absolutely emergency are all conscious, and there is no life-threatening situation. Seven of them were transferred to the hyperbaric chamber of the Brest University Hospital.

Seventeen people are also in relative emergency.

The victims were sent to hospitals in Angers, Saint-Brieuc, Saint-Malo, Fougères and Rennes.

A boiler that catches fire

An oil boiler at the establishment caught fire around 10:30 a.m. causing a fire to start. Carbon monoxide would then have spread. The boiler was placed under seal.

According to our information, children and adults have complained of headaches.

The Novi device, numerous victims, was triggered at 12:30 p.m.

Four helicopters were dispatched to the site, including three from SMUR (the mobile emergency and resuscitation service) and a Dragon from civil security. Nine rescue and victim assistance vehicles from the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (SDIS), a SAMU ambulance, seven from civil security and eight private ambulances are also deployed.
