The eye mirror: a reinvented icon?
The eye mirror is one of the most iconic pieces of bohemian style. Representing a stylized open eye, it is most often made of metal or rattan. And this is not entirely a coincidence! Because this model, which was very popular at the end of the 2010s, is one of the many variations of an iconic wall decoration from the 1950s: the sun mirror.
The sun mirror actually made its first appearance in the 1940s. At the time, the French master ironworker Gilbert Poillerat seized the witch mirror (or witch’s eye mirror), to offer a solar version, haloed with golden rays . During the following decade, the sun mirror was further modernized: its curved surface became flattened, and its metal frame gave way to rattan. The sun mirror quickly became an emblematic piece of the 50s/60s.
During the 2010s, the bohemian style took over the sun mirror, which made a resounding return to the forefront. It is then preferably adopted in rattan or gilded brass. The retro trend gives it additional momentum, and the sun mirror has established itself as a must-have for the Mid Century interior. This icon soon gave birth to a variation: the eye mirror. The latter frees itself from the boho/vintage look to invite itself into the ethnic chic or contemporary interior.
