The little history of the wall fan

The origin of the fan dates back to Antiquity. And in Egypt as in India or Greece, he had the particularity of not bending. It’s only at 7th century AD that the Japanese invented the fan that could be bent or deployed at will. You have to wait until the 16thth century for this type of fan to arrive in Europe, imported by the Portuguese.

The plant fiber wall fan has a palm shape inspired by models from Antiquity. This model with a handle is one of the iconic decorations of the bohemian style. Fans that unfold are common pieces in ethnic interiors, where they adorn the headboard or the wall above the sofa. These fans can be made from paper, fabric, or even bamboo.

In which interior should you use a wall fan?

The wall fan displays a look that evokes distant destinations. But don’t be fooled by its exotic appearance: it’s much more imaginative than you might think!

In just a few seasons, the ethnic chic style has had a makeover! We forget the accumulation of objects, and we favor a certain minimalism. We therefore now prefer the sober and monochrome bamboo fan to models displaying, for example, a Japanese print.

Often made of natural materials, and drawing a harmonious curve, the wall fan fits perfectly with current trends. It therefore finds its way into the neo-Scandinavian interior, where it is associated, for example, with the organic armchair.

The model of the moment is the wall fan with an Asian design, but with a minimalist look. We adopt it in particular in the japandi interior, or to twist a refined contemporary decor. For a contemporary and refined Zen look, combine it with a printed duvet cover in the bedroom.

How to adopt the wall fan?

This season, two models are leading the dance: the bohemian palm-shaped wall fan, and the bamboo fan which unfolds in (very) large format.

If you fear a lack of taste, opt for a wall fan in a sober, even natural color. In this bright living room, we decided to integrate it into a monochrome decoration. And it’s a walnut wood decor and colorful cushions which add a little relief.

Certainly, the general trend is towards minimalism. Fortunately, decor is above all a matter of taste! So, if you feel like it, you can of course collect models, combining bohemian wall fans and Japanese models. It’s also a rather original alternative to the wall of frames!

The wall fan is more spectacular when it is deployed in a large format. In a small space, we prefer the plant fiber model, which generally has a more compact format. This type of fan is also very versatile, since it adapts to all configurations. We adopt it solo when space is limited, or we collect it to create a pretty composition to decorate the wall above a console or a small sideboard.

The palm-shaped fan combines harmoniously with all types of wood, rattan and cane. However, the result may be a little flat. To bring life and cheerfulness to the decor, we focus on color.

In the living room, for example, we love the colorful corduroy sofa, or we simply add a kilim rug or a tufted rug. Another tip: place a few green plants in the room. Think about plant hangers, great if you’re short on space to install your pots.
