1100 men and one woman – Bavaria

A man caught the heaviest fish again this time. Although for the first time a woman was allowed to take part in the traditional Fisherman’s Day in Memmingen, she was unable to win in the end. The winner, Luca Wassermann, fished a two-kilo trout out of the city stream. The 28-year-old, who prevailed against a good 1,100 competitors, can now bear the title “Luca the first, the fresh one”. The fisherman’s day with stream fishing in Memmingen takes place annually, and has been since 1597. It was not a matter of course that a woman took part this year for the first time. Christiane Renz had to fight for the participation before the Memmingen district court. The photo shows Ms. Renz just catching her first fish. The event goes back to the fact that the municipal stream used to be fished dry once a year to clean the canal. “Most fishermen think it’s great that women can now also take part,” said Christiane Renz. “It’s actually inexplicable why it was so difficult to fight for this right for me.” She hopes that next year more women will join the fishermen’s day. The Fischertagverein had previously excluded women from the tradition by statute – with reference to the fact that this had also been the custom in previous centuries. Only after a judgment by the Memmingen district court last year did the fishermen’s association change this rule.
