103rd anniversary of the murder: Left commemorates Luxemburg and Liebknecht

It is one of the most important days of remembrance for the left: 103 years ago Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were murdered and their bodies thrown into the Landwehr Canal. Traditionally, it is commemorated in the second week of January.

The Left Party remembered Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht on Sunday morning in Berlin. The occasion was the 103rd anniversary of the murder of the two communist leaders on January 15th.

The memorial event took place at the memorial of the socialists in the central cemetery Friedrichsfelde. The party’s federal chairmen, Susanne Hennig-Wellsow and Janine Wissler, also took part in the silent commemoration. For the Berlin Left, among others, the state chairwoman Katina Schubert, the parliamentary group chairmen in the House of Representatives, Anne Helm and Carsten Schatz, as well as Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer were represented.

The memory of the two murdered politicians and of the November Revolution of 1918 is still important for the left, said Lederer. Stalinism is also part of the history of the left. “Back then, Karl and Rosa were some of those who were absolutely critical of Russian revolutionaries.” The two had stood for a democratic socialism and were murdered for it, Lederer continued.

As part of the “Liebknecht-Luxemburg-Demonstration”, hundreds of people moved from the Frankfurter Tor underground station in Friedrichshain to the memorial on Sunday morning. Various left and radical left groups called for the demonstration under the motto “Fight and Remember”. According to the police, 3,000 participants were registered.
