Anniversaries are usually set on symbolic dates: the day of the declaration of surrender at the end of a war. Or the day on which the first tanks of an occupying force roll into foreign cities. Sometimes commemorations appear to be chosen arbitrarily, such as October 3rd, which celebrates not the day the Wall fell, but the entry into force of the German-German Unification Treaty.
