The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg are German champions for the seventh time. After the 10:1 (5:0) win on Sunday at relegated Carl-Zeiss Jena, the “wolves” can no longer be caught by FC Bayern Munich on the last day of the game.

The fact that the setting on the stadium construction site in Jena was anything but perfect for the championship bash didn’t bother the Wolfsburg team and the entourage who had traveled with them at all. Minutes before the final whistle, the substitute players were dancing on the sidelines with the pre-produced championship shirts, and there were loud “This is what winners look like” and “Stand up for the wolves” chanting from the Ernst-Abbe stands, which were sparsely filled with only 760 spectators -Sports field.

Cardboard shell in Jena, real trophy in Wolfsburg

At the final whistle there was no holding back, everyone in the middle circle hugged and held up a cardboard bowl they had brought with them. The real trophy comes after the home game against Bayer Leverkusen next Sunday (2 p.m., live on NDR).

The return trip to Wolfsburg should be wet and happy. There was “one or two cold drinks” on board the bus, said the injured Pia-Sophie Wolter. “We worked hard for it, it’s sensational. I’m looking forward to the return trip,” said VfL coach Tommy Stroot with a broad grin.

Strong VfL season despite all adversities

The VfL entourage can then celebrate an almost perfect season. Coach Stroot’s team, who only came to Aller from Enschede last summer and impressively defied all adversities – personnel changes with nine departures, injuries to top performers such as Ewa Pajor, Alexandra Popp and Almuth Schult – suffered only one defeat.

Most recently, eleven wins in a row, including a 6-0 win over the now dethroned champions FC Bayern Munich. On May 28th there is also a chance for a double – in the final of the DFB Cup against Turbine Potsdam. The only drop of bitterness is the semifinals in the Champions League, in which the “wolves” pulled out of the affair respectably after the 1:5 defeat at the big FC Barcelona in the second leg (2:0).

At half time everything was already clear

The game in Jena started with a moment of shock for the VfL women: Popp had to be treated for a long time for a head injury, but then continued playing with a bandage. After that, events on the pitch took the expected one-sided course. Against completely overwhelmed Jena, the league leaders were 2-0 up after just a few minutes with goals from Pajor (8th) and Sveindís Jónsdóttir (10th).

After that, too, the only goal was for the hosts, who conceded the third goal in the best slapstick manner through an own goal by Tina Kremlitschka (18th). At the latest after Felicitas Rauch’s 4-0 lead (25th), even the last doubters should have been convinced of the Wolfsburg women’s title win. Lena Lattwein made it 5-0 before the break (38′).

VfL women don’t let up

Gentle after restart? Not with VfL. 53 seconds were played when the ball was in Jena’s net again: Jill Roord scored from 20 meters to make it 6-0. Popp increased the lead to 7-0 a little later (57th). Only then did the guests take it easy and even allowed Julia Arnold to score a consolation goal (79′). But that was only a small and short act of mercy, Tabea Waßmuth (81st), Pauline Bremer (83rd) and Svenja Huth (85th) finally made it into double digits and ensured the highest VfL win of the season with their goals.
