FC Bayern was eliminated by FC Villarreal in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Villarreal’s Joker Samuel Chukwueze scored the decisive goal shortly before the end.
FC Bayern missed the semi-finals of the Champions League. In the second leg of the quarter-finals on Tuesday (April 12, 2022), Bayern did not get past a 1-1 (0-0) draw against Villarreal. Robert Lewandowski (52 minutes) scored for Bayern, while Samuel Chukwueze, who had just come on as a substitute, scored for Villarreal (88 minutes).
The draw wasn’t enough for Bayern after losing the first leg 0-1 in Spain a week ago. “A goal was not in the air,” said Thomas Müller on “Amazon Prime”. “I don’t know what to say.” Haven’t seen that often either.
Now the team of trainer Julian Nagelsmann, whose first season has received significant scratches, only has the very likely tenth championship in a row as a consolation.
Villarreal now against Liverpool or Benfica
The Munich team failed in the quarterfinals of the most important European competition for the 12th time. Last season too, the last eight ended in the last eight (against Paris).
Europa League winner Villarreal, on the other hand, can continue to dream of the handle pot. Liverpool FC or Benfica Lisbon are now waiting in the semi-finals (April 26/27 and May 3/4).
Bayern struggle against Villarreal’s defence
A sharp cross from Leroy Sane (11th), which Geronimo Rulli fended off with his foot – there was nothing more in the initial phase. As a result, the hosts struggled against the meticulously defended guests from Villarreal. Only a header from Jamal Musiala after a cross from Leon Goretzka was there a goal threat. Otherwise there was a lack of momentum and ideas.
Villarreal were rarely able to provide relief, but they did have the best chance of the first half. However, Arnaut Danjuma (42′) pulled away. Bayern had to put up with whistles when going into the dressing room.
After the change, Bayern increased the intensity and pressure. First Dayot Upamecano (50th), then Lewandowski made his appearance. A pass from Villarreal playmaker Dani Parejo was intercepted with a sliding tackle by Kingsley Coman and things went quickly. The ball came to Lewandowski via Thomas Müller, who had two opponents in front of him and found a gap. Shot, inside post, 1-0.

For Lewandowski it was goal number 13 in the tenth Champions League game this season – it’s an impressive number.
Chukwueze shocks Bayern
From then on, Bayern played like the favorites they were on paper. What was missing was the second goal. The 71st minute was running when Leroy Sané crossed and Müller appeared eight meters from the goal in front of goalkeeper Rulli. Then Müller headed, only he headed next to the goal.

Villarreal FC did better. In the 88th minute, Bayern lost the ball in the build-up game. Then things went very quickly – too quickly for Munich’s defence. Gerard Moreno played the ball across the penalty area to Chukwueze, less than four minutes on the pitch at the time. Chukwueze didn’t hit the ball fully, but Manuel Neuer still had no chance in goal.
FC Bayern on Easter Sunday in Bielefeld
In the Bundesliga, the table leaders from Munich continue on Easter Sunday (3.30 p.m.) with a guest appearance at Arminia Bielefeld. Villarreal are already playing in Getafe on Saturday night.
