Zugspitze: friends save people buried after an avalanche – Bavaria

In an avalanche on the Zugspitze, two young men were carried away and buried. On Tuesday, three ski tourers from the Weilheim am Gatterl region were out and about. There, a slab avalanche was released due to drift snow, as reported by the mountain rescue service, which was alerted around noon.

One of the three 20-year-olds was able to free himself, the other two were reportedly carried away by the avalanche about 100 meters down. “When the avalanche stopped in flatter terrain, one person was partially buried. She was able to free herself and was unharmed.” The other young man, on the other hand, was completely buried.

The friends alerted the mountain rescue service and were able to locate the third. After about ten minutes they had freed him from about 1.50 meters of snow. The man was unconscious when friends dug him up. The 20-year-old was flown to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic in a rescue helicopter. He had regained consciousness quickly and was hypothermic.

Peter Anzenberger, the operations manager of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen mountain rescue service, speaks of an exemplary comrade rescue. The buried person owes his life to his friends. All three tourers were well equipped.
