Footballer, actor in the next Asterix… Zlatan Ibrahimovic wears several hats, but one of them makes UEFA tick. The European body announced Monday the opening of a disciplinary investigation against the Swedish striker AC Milan because of his “possible financial interest in a betting site”.

On April 14, the Swedish daily Aftonbladet was worried about the risk of disciplinary sanctions weighing on the 39-year-old player, from both UEFA and Fifa, when he had just regained the selection for the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. According to this newspaper, the he former Paris SG scorer has been one of the shareholders of Bethard, an online betting site based in Malta, through his company Unknown AB since 2018, in contradiction with the rules of the two bodies.

The case has only just begun

At this stage, UEFA has appointed “an ethics and disciplinary inspector” to investigate “a potential violation of disciplinary rules”. “Further information on this case will be communicated in due course”, adds the body to conclude its brief press release.
