zkSync will launch Layer 3 Testnet ‘Pathfinder’ in Q1 2023.

Matter Labs, the Ethereum development company behind zkSync, will launch a public testnet for an Ethereum scalable prototype called ‘Pathfinder’ in Q1 2023, which could become the first Layer 3 network built on Ethereum.

“Pathfinder represents a special moment for Ethereum where we can see its history being built together as a public test network ecosystem,” said Steve Newcomb, Chief Product Officer at zkSync.

Layer 3 will increase all the benefits of Layer 2 and is a significant leap forward in other important scaling areas, according to Newcomb, adding that this will enable wider adoption.

Pathfinder’s early stages will be open to anyone to experiment, research, and participate in the development of this new scalable solution.

“For us on the engineering team, Pathfinder will really help us understand the shape of these systems that are likely to take place in the future. And to tackle some of the toughest problems early on, we believe that when it comes to engineering complex systems, The best way to make progress is to rigorously test and repeat. with real-world feedback,” said Anthony Rose, Head of Engineering at zkSync.

Another important benefit of Layer3 networks according to Newcomb is that they enable native bridging between blockchains.

Native Bridging is when users want to move tokens or money from one blockchain to another. then they don’t have to lock or give their tokens to a third-party ‘escrow’ service. This could fix one of the industry’s main blind spots right now. This is because billions of dollars have been stolen through a bridge vulnerability between Layer 1 and Layer 2 blockchains in the past year.
