How many people live in Germany – and in what circumstances? The census – the large population census – is supposed to answer this question. Participation in the census is mandatory. We explain what to look out for.
Who is interviewed?
The respective federal states decide on the nationwide sample. Hundreds of thousands of representative addresses were selected for this. Whoever was selected for the sample must also answer.
Participation in the household survey is mandatory. “The results are only reliable if all respondents answer truthfully,” emphasized Marcel Hürter, President of the State Office in Rhineland-Palatinate.
What is the penalty for refusal?
Shortly before the census began Federal Statistical Office once again pointed out that the citizens who were asked must respond. “All people who are asked to provide information at the census are obliged to provide the information truthfully, completely and within the deadlines set by the survey agencies,” the authority said on Friday in Wiesbaden. For the first time in eleven years there will be a census in Germany from Monday (May 16, 2022). More than 30 million people are surveyed nationwide.
Anyone who does not answer will be reminded of the information and asked for the information again. “If respondents do not comply with their obligation to provide information even after being reminded several times, penalty payments or fines are possible,” the Federal Office said. The amount is determined by the federal states.
When does the census take place?
The surveys should be completed by mid-August. May 15 is the key date for collecting the data.
What information is requested
There are two surveys: one on people and one on buildings and apartments. About 10.3 million randomly selected people are to receive information about, among other things, Surname, gender and Marital status and nationality give. According to the authority, around three quarters of people are also asked further questions, such as Graduation or profession. The approximately 300,000 people who live in dormitories and communal accommodation are also recorded.
In addition, all of the approximately 23 million owners or administrations of housing should provide information about their apartments and residential buildings. For the first time, the net cold rent, duration and reason for vacancy as well as the energy source of the heating are also queried.
How does the survey take place?
According to the Federal Office, only some of the questions should be clarified in short personal interviews. Most could be answered online. There are also paper questionnaires. The information will be used anonymously.
First, general questions are asked about the members of the household. It should take five to ten minutes. In addition, there are access data for the online transmission of further information, for example on the level of education and employment. This should also take about ten minutes.
