Yes, the number of employees who have physically demanding work has increased

If the government seems determined to pass its pension reform, the opposition does not give up. Beyond the demonstrations and strikes that mobilize the French and the French, on the side of the political sphere, there are many arguments against. This time, La France Insoumise MP for the Somme, François Ruffin, says the jobs are more physically demanding than in the 1980s.

“In 1984, there were 12% of employees who suffered three physical constraints,” he said. And to add: “We say to ourselves, well, after 40 years of robotics, computing, all that must have been tremendously lightened. Well, on the contrary, we have gone from 12% to 34% who experience three physical constraints today. What are these figures really? 20 minutes make the point.

FAKE OFF

According to the reasoning of François Ruffin, since the work would be more difficult today, it would make little sense to push back the retirement age. Since the workers would be more fragile and more exhausted than before.

The physical constraints mentioned by the deputy are as follows according to the various studies carried out : Standing for a long time, standing for a long time in another painful or tiring posture, making long or frequent walks, carrying or moving heavy loads, performing painful or tiring movements, undergoing jolts or vibrations.

A study by the Ministry of Labor entitled “What are the recent changes in working conditions and psychosocial risks? », and published in 2017, confirms the words of François Ruffin. In 1984, 12% of employees declared that they actually experienced at least three physical constraints, in particular carrying a heavy load, remaining in an awkward posture, or even being subjected to jolts or vibrations. In 2016, when this study was carried out, this almost tripled to 34%.

The least skilled workers are penalized. They are 63% to suffer these constraints in 2016, three times more than in 1984. Those whose evolution is the most catastrophic are the employees of shops and services, contrary to what one might have expected. They were 13% to suffer at least three of these physical constraints in the 80s, and 35 years later, they are now 46.9%.
