“Yes, I am a candidate for the presidential election”, declared Yannick Jadot in a
interview at the Obs and on TF1. “I want to put ecology at the heart of power” and “build a French ecology team,” he told TF1’s 20-hour newscast. “We cannot for a second come to terms with the prospect of a victory for the right or the far right. Neither at status quo proposed by Emmanuel Macron which is nothing other than a new conformism, a denial of the climate emergency and a social regression ”, he declared during his interview with Obs.

The ecologist MEP specified in the columns of the newspaper that this candidacy was part of the primary organized by EELV in September to appoint its representative in the presidential election. “I intend to solicit the support of my political family. Even if all the organizational conditions are not yet known as I speak to you, I will participate in the primary or any designation process that will be chosen, ”he said.

“I have always been loyal”

He also assured that in the event that he would not be elected in the primary, he undertook to support the EELV candidate who will be chosen. ” It is the rule ! I have always been loyal to my political family. You know, my only commitment for thirty years is ecology and solidarity. Before him, the mayor of Grenoble Eric Piolle and the former number 2 of the Greens, Sandrine Rousseau, had already announced their candidacy for the primary of Europe-Ecology-les-Verts.

Defender of an ecology beyond the right / left cleavage, the most media of the Green candidates, head of the EELV list in the 2019 European elections, has drawn strong criticism from rebellious France (LFI) and has sometimes stirred up his own camp in recent years. In the spring he worked for a possible single candidacy on the left for 2022 but faced reluctance, in particular from the rebels.

“When we see to what extent climate change is the great challenge of our society (…) it is around this project that I want to bring together all those on the left who see that the question of ecology is central. We’ll see who wants to come, ”he said on Wednesday.
