MEP Gunnar Beck from the AfD has to go to court on suspicion of misusing titles. The district court in Neuss announced this on Thursday. The date of the hearing is May 5th. The district court had previously issued a penalty order in the amount of 60 daily rates against the 56-year-old Beck, against which his defense attorney had announced an objection.

Doubts about the title of professor

In 2019, the Düsseldorf public prosecutor’s office initiated preliminary proceedings against Beck. Doubts had previously arisen about the politician’s professorship. Beck had rejected the allegations: he had been working as a university teacher in Great Britain for many years.

According to the public prosecutor’s office, he is said to have introduced himself as a “professor” at a meeting of the AfD in Magdeburg in November 2018, without actually being a professor. The law provides for a fine or imprisonment of up to one year for the misuse of titles.
