Germany’s soccer women scored a convincing victory in the World Cup qualification against Serbia. Lea Schüller had a dream day and scored four goals.
The team of national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg prevailed on Tuesday (21.09.2021) in Chemnitz after a weak first half with 5: 1 (0: 1). In front of 1,600 spectators, 16-year-old Nina Matejic brought the initially surprisingly strong guests into the lead in the third minute. Lea Schüller from FC Bayern Munich turned the game around in favor of the 2016 Olympic champion with four goals in a row (49th / 54th / 71st / 77th minute). Melanie Leupolz scored the final score (79th).
“The first half was simply not our claim. We knew that we could do better. In the second half, it was outstanding,” said Schüller on the ZDF microphone. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s half-time speech broke the knot. What the national coach said? “We’re not supposed to play girls’ football. She was totally dissatisfied, and so were we, of course,” Schüller reported from the dressing room.
The moment of shock before the break
Shortly before the break, the game had to be interrupted for five minutes because the English assistant referee Helen Edwards complained of malaise and could no longer continue. Edwards was then taken to the hospital. She was replaced by the fourth official, Helen Conley. After the game, the DFB announced that Edwards was “stable and approachable”.
After the 7-0 win against Bulgaria last Saturday, the DFB team now lead Group H with six points. Other opponents on the way to the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand are Israel, Portugal and Turkey. The games are also important tests for the EM next year in England.
