Watch the video: Controversial World Cup in Qatar is underway – videos show chaotic scenes at Fanfest.

Spectacle to mark the opening of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Fireworks lit the sky over Al-Bayt Stadium in Al-Khor on Sunday. The FIFA World Cup was thus considered to have started, and the first game of the competition followed: hosts Qatar against players from South America’s Ecuador. The guests won 2-0, and the first goal caused frenetic enthusiasm among the fans inside and outside the stadium, like here at the fan festival in Doha. An hour before the opening game kicked off, there were chaotic scenes in front of and on the grounds of the fan festival in Al Bidda Park. Apparently too many fans had tried to get access. The site is designed for 40,000 people. According to eyewitnesses, around twice as many were waiting to be admitted. Then the police had to remove angry people from the area. Apparently, the fans got away with the shock – initially nothing was reported about injuries. On Monday, among others, England will play against Iran. The German national team will play their first game on Wednesday, against Japan.
