Significantly more than in the last game of the DFB men: More than eight million people watched the women’s World Cup.

The historically early end of the German footballers at the World Cup has at least given ZDF strong ratings. 8.06 million viewers watched the game against South Korea on Thursday afternoon. The market share was a very strong 63.5 percent. However, the 1-1 draw in Brisbane was not enough for the team around captain Alexandra Popp (32) to progress. For the first time, the DFBWomen so in the group stage of a World Cup.

The audience figures for the last group game are particularly remarkable given the broadcast date on Thursday at 12 noon. After all, not many people have time to watch a football game during the day on a working day – even though almost all federal states are currently on summer vacation.

Only slightly weaker odds than Sunday’s game against Colombia

The second game in the German group saw even more viewers with 10.63 million. But the 2-1 defeat against Colombia was also played last Sunday; the market share was correspondingly slightly weaker at 61.6 percent.

The opening game against Morocco on July 24, a Monday, drew even less interest. Only 5.61 million fans tuned in to the clear 6-0 opening win. At that time, the team coached by Martina Voss-Tecklenburg (55) was not as concerned as it was against South Korea.

More spectators than the DFB men recently

Overall, however, the ratings for the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand can be considered a success. Public interest in the DFB men has recently fallen sharply. Only 6.35 million fans watched Hansi Flick’s (58) team’s last game on June 20, 2023 – even though the defeat against Colombia was in prime time on RTL. However, the 0:2 was only a test match.
