During excavations in Iraq, archaeologists from the University of Pennsylvania have discovered a tavern that is around 5,000 years old.
The researchers found an antique stove, a kind of “fridge”, several bowls with fish leftovers and even an outdoor area with seating. The remains were about half a meter underground.
The discovery site is in Tell el-Hiba in the southeast of Iraq, in what was then southern Mesopotamia.
The “pub” was built around 2700 years before Christ.
Then as now, people feasted together in restaurants.
For the scientists, the tavern is not only a special, but also an educational discovery.
According to archaeologist Reid Goodman, the find proves that in addition to a ruling upper class and slaves, there was also a middle class that “did not work under the tyranny of kings” and met together to eat.
